Victoria Secret Ad
Who:Victoria Secret ,
When: 2015 and was published globally
Source: The Huffington Post.
This advertisement was published all around the world to show the projected beauty standard for women in the United States. This ad only shows women that are very thin, they have big and bold eyes, and a petite shape meaning little waist, smaller boobs and less of a booty. These women are portrayed as to how all women that buy Victoria Secret clothing should look this way and that is honestly impossible without some photoshopping being done. This can be seen as a way to make women feel like they are unattractive if they don't look this way in the bra and panties.
The ad affects all women but in particularly teens and young women. I am not saying that older women don't have game but that is what VS is tailored to. These type ads are seen on a daily basis and affects how women began to think of themselves. There are women that aren't ashamed of their bodies like me and that can still rock the same bra and panties. But the world only sees what they want to see and what they much rather see is a skinny girl with no shape wear their bra and panties. There is no awareness of the impact that Victoria Secret makes on teens and young women because they are simply putting out what everyone needs to see so that every teen that can afford Victoria Secret will go buy it. This can also be seen as a marketing tactic for the simple fact that people want to buy items that would look good on them not what looks good on some people. Also showing that everyone should be the same and that their is little adversity and uniqueness within our world.
Another thing that can be seen through ads like this is ethnicity. Meaning that yes there is a black girl in this picture upon many others but their hair is never natural (curly or in a fro) it is simply straightened or curled and that falls into the category of setting a standard for how all women should look. This goes back to a commercial that aired about a year or 2 ago that talked about how little girls that have luxurious curly hair naturally don't want to wear it out because they are embarrassed. Little kids pick up on what they see on TV and if back girls are seen as only having straight hair then they will want the same. This goes back to as well the standards of women and how big of an impact Victoria Secret has on our society.
Victoria Secret isn't too expensive because you do get what you pay for and you also don't have to be rich or have a lot of money to buy Victoria Secret clothing or anything else they sell.
The creators of this image use body size and simple colors to make the women pop and also their bra and panties pop out. Having little words on the ad keeps you focused on the women and wanting to go buy this right away. The deadly sins that are shown in this ad are lust, envy and greed. Lust is shown through the use of how little clothes the models are wearing and how close they are "sexy." Envy is shown because Victoria Secret wants people too feel like they should look this way or they shouldn't buy it and everyone should have this outfit or work towards this body standard. Lastly, greed is used because Victoria Secret wants people to buy this outfit amongst others they sell so that they can make more money and sell more material. More things sold = More $. Although the ad says "I Love My Body" their is still some bias as to what is seen as a good body or a perfect body.
I think this is a very interesting advertisement choice because generally advertisements that involve half naked women have an intended audience of men due to the feeling of lust but I like your use of lust in the sense that is similar to envy in that women see these models and want to look like them to be considered "sexy". I also didn't think about greed as used in advertisement for the company to make more money but I think that this can be applied to all advertisements because all companies have ads to make money.
